Arizona State receives grant funding from USA Triathlon May 05 2015

In a report out today by SportsBusinessDaily.com, Arizona State was selected as one of eight recipients of a USA Triathlon Grant. Officials hope The $2.6M Women’s Triathlon Emerging Sport Grant can elevate the sport to an NCAA championship level. The Grant is the first of its kind, and will see $480,000 distributed to eight schools in ’15-16. Those schools will receive a total of $980,000 through ’17-18.

The goal for the grant is to provide additional support and resources for each schools run programs and to help attract new student-athletes who normally wouldn’t consider the schools.

USA Triathlon CEO Rob Urbach is quoted as saying “The institutions selected were visionary -- looking at a sport that has a very high trajectory, that is economically very desirable in terms of participation.”

ASU VP/Athletics Ray Anderson said. “We have some of the best facilities in the country for this. Triathlon is a very popular event not just here but internationally as well. We think it would be a real enhancement.”

Arizona State would be the first Power 5 institution to adopt women’s triathlon.
